New file transfer security with Norton AntiVirus

Posted by Amy_Young

Yahoo! Messenger is a great way to share files with friends instantly. With a simple drag and drop you can send photos, music, word docs, spreadsheets – virtually any kind of file up to 2GB in size.

But everyone fears receiving a file that contains a virus; they can lurk in files from even the closest of friends. So we’re happy to announce new, enhanced file transfer security as part of the partnership between Yahoo! Messenger and Symantec.

Yahoo! Messenger has teamed up with Symantec to provide automatic file scanning for users of Norton AntiVirus 2007/2008 and Norton Internet Security 2007/2008 (for Windows). If you have one of those products installed on your PC and are using the latest Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta, the files you receive from friends via IM are automatically scanned in the background. If there is a potential security risk with the file you’re receiving, Norton alerts you.

Norton is the first and currently the only security software to provide this level of automatic protection to users of Yahoo Messenger 9.0*. If you do not already have Norton installed on your PC, visit http://www.norton.com/YahooIM to get Norton Internet Security 2008 or Norton AntiVirus 2008.

*The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta (9.0.0.922) is required. If you’re not sure of your version number, go to the Help menu in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta and choose “About Yahoo! Messenger”. If needed, you can download the latest version at http://beta.messenger.yahoo.com.

Update on the Classic Mail Update

Posted by YahooAngel

About a month ago I posted about the streamlining and updating of Yahoo! Mail Classic. As of this posting only a handful of you Classic users may have been transitioned over to the updated version (you can tell by reviewing some of the details in this post), with everyone else waiting for the rollouts to continue.

Yahoo_ liamsAs many of you may remember from my chat with Skotch during the rollout of the All-New Yahoo! Mail, when it comes to rolling out something of this magnitude we prefer the careful approach. The rollout is gradual and is very closely monitored during each step.

We know that many of you are using Yahoo! Mail this winter to coordinate those all-important holiday plans with family and friends (whether Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Soyal, Winter Solstice, Yule, or even Festivus). Many others are using it for your business communications with clients or customers, and may be counting on maximizing that holiday business. Either way this is an absolutely critical time of year for communicating, and, although we know you are excited to experience the updated Mail Classic, the Yahoo! Mail team is mitigating exposure for users by delaying the product push until January.
That being the case we are still going to be hard at work behind the scenes tweaking and streamlining Yahoo! Mail Classic. Already back by popular demand is Forward as Attachment. Many of you never saw it go away, only seeing its impending removal on the list of changes, but worry not, it will remain a part of Classic (if you are using the updated Classic all you have to do is hold the Ctrl key - Command Key for Mac users - when you click on the Forward button). As far as the product rollout goes, however, we are officially on hold until January.

Welcome aboard, now get your RSS on!!!

I guess it turns out that Field of Dreams wasn’t entirely on point with the whole “build it … they will come” stuff. Blog stats over the last week have given me a strong indication that the movie should have added “and provide a link” to the famous phrase. That being the case, we are in fact seeing a lot of new visitors to the blog, so I’m going to take another opportunity to ask you to bookmark, subscribe, make this your homepage, or if you want to be really nice … just never leave.

Yahoo! loginThis is VERY important for you folks who check that box, during sign-in, that keeps you signed in for two weeks. If you are signed in for two weeks, that means you probably won’t be seeing that sign-in page for two weeks. And since the link is pretty much only on that page (fear not, I’m working on that!) you need to make sure you know how to get back here. Rest assured, there are also links in the “other blogs” areas on other Yahoo! blogs, but why not just save yourself some trouble and jump on board while you are here? You’ll be glad you did.

You can also subscribe to the RSS Feed, or even better you can add it to MyYahoo by clicking Add to My Yahoo! and you can see updates there! I look forward to seeing you back here in the future.

Messenger for Vista ready for 64-bit

Posted by YahooAngel
Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Preview is now available for users who are running a 64-bit version of Vista. Please go and download the latest version from our website (build 2007.12.06.421).

This is a preview version only (pre-beta) so not everything is in here that you might be used to seeing in other versions of Yahoo! Messenger. Here’s a list of the features included today:

- Entirely new interface that harnesses the power of WPF, the graphics subsystem in Windows Vista
- Organize your conversations into tabs, or drag and drop a tab out to create a new window
- Keep up with your favorite contacts by dragging them into the Windows Sidebar gadget
- Send enhanced emoticons that have some extra oomph
- Change the color of your IM windows with a built-in skin chooser. Go crazy with a different skin for every IM window!

- Adjust the display size of your contacts with a handy slider
- Arrange your contact list into multiple columns just by resizing your window
- Send instant messages to your Yahoo! and Windows Live Messenger contacts
- Send files to friends as large as 2 GB
- Find contacts quickly with the contact search bar. Type in a few letters of the contact’s name or ID and they’ll come up in filtered results.
- As-you-type spell checker that’s smart enough to know that “LOL” is not something to correct
- A preferences menu you can access by right-clicking anywhere at the top of the main Messenger window

Thanks to everyone for your input on the feedback form and here on the blog regarding the issue. Who knew there were so many 64-bit Vista users out there?

Today I was looking  over Yahoo! Messenger blog and saw Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista released. This is the first Yahoo Messenger release by Yahoo which is built from the ground up for the Windows Vista operating system. Release not even a beta, its just a pre-beta release so wont have all the cool features of the final messenger.

The new interface is what I like about Yahoo! Messenger for vista. The graphics are excellent. You can organize your conversations into tabs, or drag and drop a tab out to create a new window. You also keep up with your favorite contacts by dragging them into the Windows Sidebar gadget.
There are alot more feature which I can talk about. I'll directly paste the features.

New call history archive on Yahoo! Voice site

Posted by YahooAngel

If you make PC-to-Phone calls on Yahoo! Messenger, you’ll love the two new features we’ve added to the Yahoo! Voice website.

A frequent request from our voice users is a complete call history. Good news! Now you can view your entire PC-to-Phone call history on the Yahoo! Voice website. Be sure you’re signed in, then click the “My Call History” link near the top of the page. You can view your calls by month in a list showing all calls, or in lists of just outgoing or incoming calls.

Each call history includes the date and time the call was made, phone number, location, duration of the call, price per minute and total charges. The call history automatically displays your fifty most recent calls; click the page numbers near the top to go further back in your history.

The call history on the Yahoo! Voice site only includes PC-to-Phone calls made through a Phone Out account. To view recent call history for your last three hundred calls, including free PC-to-PC calls, click on the “Contacts” menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select “Call History”.

We also made the auto-recharge option for your Phone Out account more customizable. In the past, the Auto-recharge amount would automatically default to the last amount for the Phone Out purchase that you made. But now you can specify either $10 or $25 as your auto-recharge option. Just visit the Yahoo! Voice site, be sure you’re signed in, then click on the “My Services” link near the top of the page.

Speaking of Yahoo! Voice, we have a 2nd birthday coming up!

In December 2005, we began offering premium voice services in the Windows version of our product. You can use Yahoo! Voice services to make free PC-to-PC calls to other Messenger contacts, or purchase a Phone Out account to call your friends’ mobile or regular phones from Messenger for as low as 1¢ a minute. We also offer
Phone In accounts, allowing you to purchase a phone number which you can use to receive calls right in Yahoo! Messenger. With the recent release of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta, call forwarding was also introduced, allowing you to forward incoming calls to your Yahoo! Messenger to another phone number, even if you’re signed out.

Ridiculously cool upgrade to Flickr maps and Places

Posted by YahooAngel

flickr_places2.jpgAugust 29th, 2006 was an exciting day for us; it was the day after Flickr first announced their Geotagging feature using the Yahoo! Maps API, and they had exceeded their first month projection of 1 million geotagged photos in a single day. It goes to show that putting pictures and places together go hand-in-hand like peas and carrots, Bonnie and Clyde… You get the idea.

Today Flickr released two new maps-related features. The new Flickr Places pages will take some of the 30+ million publicly geotagged photos already uploaded and organize them into key themes for over 100,000 locations. Each Places page features interesting photos and photographers, related Flickr Groups, and the tags that make that area unique.

The maps page itself gets a great upgrade as well, with an improved world map where people can easily view popular and up-to-date themes. Clicking on any of these hot tags will take you to a selection of current photos from that area, tagged with more detailed information. This will provide a great visual lens into the latest interesting things happening around the world.

These new features further demonstrate our commitment to a global platform and will be available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, and traditional Chinese.

New Homepage Yahoo Music and Music Videos Section

Posted by Y! FC Admin

A few months ago I posted on our release of the beta version of our new Homepage and Music Videos section. Today I’m excited to announce that we’ve exited beta and have made the new site available to everyone who visits music.yahoo.com.

WOO-HOO!!!

As I mentioned in July, this is the first significant change that we’ve made to our site since 2001. Since then, a lot has changed on the Internet, but our music website has remained the same, almost attaining the kind of affectionate status you reserve for an old sweatshirt that is incredibly comfortable but makes your Significant Other cringe every time they see it.

When we started this project many months ago, we had little idea of what the site would look like when done, but we had some pretty clear ideas about where we wanted to go. We’d spent some time talking to people who use our site and assessing opinions through surveys to determine where we wanted to take the site. I dug up some of my old documentation to remember what the heck I was thinking when we started this project, and thought I’d share what we wanted to do and how the end product stacked up:

Editorial Voice: A while back, my colleague Todd Beaupre did a great presentation on the need for more editorial voice on our site. The challenge is that while people who use our site love getting context to better understand the music they hear and the videos they watch and often appreciate the recommendations of our editorial staff on what’s new and worth a listen, we cater to 25 million people each month and finding an editorial voice that appeals to everyone and turns off no one is pretty impossible. So we decided to create several editorial channels and let our users pick from among them.

We ended up developing two editorial placements on our new Homepage: one is the large module in the upper left-hand side of the page that showcases our best picks of videos, music, photos and lyrics. The other is our Music Blogs module, found at the bottom of the page, that lets our bloggers communicate their favorite music, playlists, great (or truly horrifying) moments in entertainment and everything else you need to know about the wide world of music. The bloggers are really an exceptional group, including our own Dave DiMartino and Lyndsey Parker; bloggers from some great publications and sites like MOJO, Arthur, NME, URB, Spin and JamBase; and other fine folks from outside of Yahoo! who are sharing their playlists and observations about the music scene. One great find here is a blog that we recently kicked off on hearing that Led Zeppelin is getting back together. Our Executive Editor Dave DiMartino will be posting some great, exclusive stuff in the coming days. The best part of the blogs feature is that we put our users in control of what they see: if you click through to our main blogs page you can select which blogs you want to see, and screen out the ones you don’t like.

I have to say that since we released our site in beta, the blogs have become one of the most popular areas of the new site, as well as one of my personal favorites.

Visually Impaired Now Have Own Yahoo! Mail

Posted by Mike

Yahoo! IncWith the launch of a new product called the Yahoo! Mail Classic, the company’s products have become more accessible to the users – even the visually impaired. Interestingly, the Yahoo! Mail Classic functions on all standard screen reader software and can be used by the common masses too.

It is a novel idea, where the screen reader software identifies the text for the user and then transforms it to sound and speech or even a Braille printout that helps even the blind to use the mail.

Usually the screen readers are used help the visually impaired in the educational efforts and this technology has now been successfully utilized by Yahoo! to enable them in sending and receiving e-mails.

For instance, when a person clicks on the mail icon, the software will send out speech or sounds like ‘enter your user id’, ‘now enter your password’ or ‘click on the following icon’ making it easy for the visually challenged to use the mailing system on the Internet.

Yahoo! R&D experts in Bangalore have made this possible in accordance with the company’s ideology to make its products easily accessible to one and all. The team of experts was led by Victor Tsaran, popularly known as accessibility guru! Now, with this breakthrough people across the board and will all disabilities can benefit from the Internet.
